As a child, The Nutcracker was one of my favorite ballet productions. It inspired my desire to become a ballerina and to take ballet lessons in primary school back in Trinidad.

With a fabulous score by Tchaikovsky, the ballet premièred at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892. Now, more than 100 years later, it is still enormously popular and continues to be performed around the world, especially at Christmas time.

Of all of the productions I have seen, the one I saw today on the internet is by far the most surprising and innovative. Maestro Victor Vener of the California Philharmonic in Pasadena had the brilliant idea to invite dancers Cyrus "Glitch" Spencer, Kevin "Konkrete" Davis and James "BDash" Derrick (from "So You Think You Can Dance" and "America's Best Dance Crew") to add their original and modern spin on the dance, as they perform with the orchestra. The dancers, dressed as toy soldiers, bring a fresh and enchanting interpretation to the traditional and well-loved piece.

I hope you will find it as delightful as I did.
Enjoy!
Happy Holidays!!
